Why the memory can vanish while you describe it
Recall is reconstructive. Each detail you retrieve can cue another, but it can also be replaced by a more plausible waking interpretation. Dreams often contain abrupt shifts and weak causal structure. When language tries to impose a sequence, the original fragments may become harder to distinguish from the explanation being built around them.
Interference is especially powerful at waking because the environment returns all at once. The room, the clock and the plan for the day provide strong, well-learned cues.
